They held the position of the highest ranking officials of the Nazi Party within the designated Gause, acting as direct representative of the central party leadership, including Adolf Hitler.

Their authority was unrestricted by conventional state institutions, rendering them pivotal agents in the enforcement of the regimes totalitarian control. By the wars end several gauleiters were subsequently prosecuted for war crimes.
