Shield of Sparrows is a slow-burn, high-stakes romantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros—where enemies become lovers, monsters stalk a cursed realm, and a forgotten princess finds the strength to tear off her crown and become the warrior she was never meant to be.

The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.

I’ve spent my life kneeling—to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.

I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood.

But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father’s throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.

Now I’m crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him—bound to a future I didn’t choose and a husband I barely know.

Everyone wants me to be something I’m not—a queen, a spy, a sacrifice.

But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there’s power in being underestimated?

And what if—for the first time—I reached for it?

The Shield of Sparrows trilogy is an epic slow-burn romantasy best enjoyed in order.

  • It was okay

The beginning twist was interesting but started to get bored within the first few chapters. I didn’t like the FMC’s internal dialogue and constant self-questioning.. it’s kind of annoying throughout the whole book. The banter between the main characters was OK but they aren’t top tier. The last 200-300 pages definitely got more interesting and the cliffhanger is probably what saves the book and will make you want to continue the series. ALSO, the audiobook MMC narrator was so badly casted I had to stop listening and read the book instead because I knew he was going to ruin the Guardian for me.

Loved everything about this book from the characters to the plot development. I was invested from the very beginning! Only negative is the cliffhanger and having to wait so long for the next!

This book got me out of a massive slump. I don’t usually finish books. Something about these characters just felt accurate. I love that the main girl gave off a dumb feeling like she just didn’t belong which is fitting for the story and her experiencing culture shock. There was nothing significant about her. She wasn’t insanely smart or skilled at fighting and I think that’s what made her character so lovely.

This book held me hostage like Bill Murray’s character in Groundhogs Day (and not in a good way). Odessa is unintelligent and unlikeable. Ransom is boring and limited character development. I skim ready the last 200 pages and wished I’d saved myself the agony.

Monsters roam the world, enemies become lovers and the MFC finds her true strength. This book kept me interested as the story unfolded, the banter between the main characters was fun, I would highly recommend!

I really liked the story and characters in this romantasy. It had some similar troupes which can get tiresome (like the woman with the unique red hair and the overly masculine love interest) but because the story is unique it made for an interesting read. I look forward to the next book. Hopefully they improve the writing in the sex scenes which were probably the weakest part of the book.
  • Twist ending I didn’t see coming

Really enjoyed the twist at the end of this book, and now I’m eager to see what happens next! The first half of this book dragged a bit. But the pace really picked up in the second half. I enjoy the mysteries going on in this world, hope to have a lot more revealed in the next book.
