A murderous android discovers itself in All Systems Red, a tense science fiction adventure by Martha Wells that interrogates the roots of consciousness through Artificial Intelligence.

“As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure.”

In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.

But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.

On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.

But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.

Short novella kept my attention enough to buy a second book.
  • Kind of a money grab

Feels like a money grab on this one. The story is fine, it’s a little slow and just as it starts to ramp, it cuts off and you will need to buy book 2. At 12 dollars a book, it feels like this is a story she wrote and then broke into multiple books as a way to charge above what normal novels would cost. People like it and don’t mind paying, but even though I’d like to read the next one, I’m voting with my dollars. I’d hate to see this become more of an industry norm.

I adored the title character. He/they feel introverted and quirky and a little neurodivergent, and just so, so appealing. Wonderful!
  • Good sci-fi read. Lots of action.

Plot is not as as complex or deep as say a Dan Simmons or Peter Hamilton sci-fi , but never the less I enjoyed my time spent reading this book.

I was looking for funny like The Martian but this wasn’t it. Still pretty enjoyable to read. I also watched the show and it’s pretty similar

4.5 stars rounded up. This is such a fun read, and a new comfort read for me. Murderbot should not be as relatable as he is, but alas.

I enjoyed this one a lot. If you’re watching the series, the book is still worth it. It’s a quick, easy read - shorter than your average book, closer to a novella, but it held my interest all the way through. I love a well-crafted story where every paragraph matters. Solid sci-fi with likable characters, tech elements, and a compelling story. Definitely recommend.
