An enjoyable read. Yet, kind of heavy handed in its philosophy. And, in terms of story, every plot element can be seen coming, thus detracting from real character development and any sense of suspense as to the outcome. Pullman provides what he calls “Lantern Slides” at the end of each book, which are little tidbits on character and plot developments that are interesting. Overall, though, I didn’t find the trilogy compelling enough to consider reading other works by Pullman.

This is one of those trilogies that you have to read all the way through. Put it down for a few years and read again at a crossroads in life where the choices aren't very clear. Each reading awakens new cathedrals in the mind and soul. My soul cries out like Pan every time I finish the last book. But by the time I read the last word, my life brims with unexpected courage and my mind knows more clearly which path to take.

Just so, so good. It really expands the imagination with the overwhelming imagery so well illustrated! I'm sure I will read this series again in a few years.

I read this book when I was 10. I had always been a very advanced reader and couldn't find a book that was both interesting, and a challenge. This book took me probably two months to finish. It was one of those books where at the end you feel like crying because it's all over, there's no more. I loved this book so much and have read it two more times. It is emotional and gets your mind working, and thinking about crazy sorts of things. I love the science and imagination put in to this book. It is very well written, band I highly recommend it.
